Learning through Maori myths and legends...

Our past...

We have been learning about the past, especially the area where our school is. Therefor we visited  the Te Waotu Playcentre, which is the first, age old Te Waotu Native School.  We visited the Barnett Bush, which is a remnant of bush that existed before the great Taupo eruption in AD 186. Children in Room 1 have been very busy writing about their history!

We have been listening to Maori myths and legends and found out how Maori women first learned to weave: from observing! We learned to weave a kete!

Mrs Vullings, Mrs Hamilton and Mrs Bain spoke about the past, the present and the future of this beautiful part of Aoteaoroa: our backyard!

Maori language week!

It is Maori language week. We already know some Te Reo. We can count to 20, we can greet people politely. We know our colours, and we can sing some waiata. We also know where our mahunga, pakahiwi, puke, hope and waewae are.
Now we are listening to lots of stories and responding to them.

Matariki Friday...

Today we celebrated Matariki. We sang Tirama tirama nga whetu...twinkle twinkle little star. We made lanterns and scraffito art showing Matariki.
We also shook hands and promised to be friends forever!  Matariki is a good time for that....a time for new beginnings!

We are learning about Matariki, the 7 stars that appear at this time of the year.  They signal the start of the Maori New Year. We are making kites and have been producing some excellent writing. Here is Max's story...

A sparkly world...

We look after ourselves first by eating healthy food.
We are then able to look after our family.
If our family is healthy and happy, then they are able to look after our school and community.
They, in turn, are looking after the wider world... All of us together can make the world sparkle!
